World Refrigeration Day, quiero compartir nuestra vision.

Cool intelligence, to me, means making every cooling decision smarter, not just for today, but for the decades ahead.

I work at the intersection of refrigeration technology, energy efficiency, and sustainability. My role involves helping building owners and cooling operators across the Middle East transition to next-generation, low-GWP refrigerants, turning what is often seen as a compliance challenge into a genuine performance and cost advantage.

The skills I draw on daily blend deep technical knowledge of refrigeration systems with commercial thinking and stakeholder engagement — from engineers on the plant room floor to sustainability leaders in the boardroom.

As Chair of the Refrigeration Committee at the ASHRAE Saudi Arabia Chapter, I also work to advance refrigerant management best practices across the region, through technical webinars, industry publications, and direct engagement with policymakers navigating the global refrigerant transition.

Cool intelligence, ultimately, is about recognising that every refrigerant choice, every retrofit decision, and every efficiency gain adds up — for the industry, for building occupants, and for the planet.

To me, Cool Intelligence represents the industry's ability to combine innovation, knowledge, and collaboration to develop refrigeration solutions that are more efficient, safe, and sustainable.

As Content Director for a specialized HVAC&R media platform, I have the privilege of engaging every day with the people, technologies, and ideas shaping our industry. This perspective has shown me that innovation is not driven by technology alone. Behind every advancement, every project, and every breakthrough are people whose talent, curiosity, and commitment continue to move our industry forward.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my work is connecting these voices, not only from a technical perspective, but also from a human one. Every engineer, technician, researcher, educator, and industry leader has a story to tell, and sharing those stories helps us better understand the true impact of refrigeration.

World Refrigeration Day is an opportunity to recognize an industry that often works behind the scenes, yet is essential to modern life. Refrigeration protects food, safeguards healthcare, enables industry, improves comfort, and supports a more sustainable future.

For me, that is the true meaning of Cool Intelligence, bringing together technology, knowledge, and people to create solutions that make a lasting difference in our world.

What I do
I am Timo Kaufhold, Technical Manager and Leader of the Academy at Midea Europe GmbH. At my core, I am a passionate refrigeration and air conditioning technician (Kälte- und Klimaanlagenbauer). Today, my role goes far beyond the traditional installation of split systems and heat pumps. I focus on technical training, content engineering, and education. Whether I am developing custom mobile HVAC training racks or collaborating directly with vocational schools and industry partners, my mission is to bridge the gap between complex, cutting-edge climate technology and the professionals who work with it every day.
The skills I use
My foundation is built on deep, hands-on technical expertise in thermodynamics, cooling, and heating systems. However, I combine this traditional trade knowledge with modern digital skills. As a content engineer, I leverage high-end video production, digital data exchange standards, and even emerging technologies like VR and AR to create immersive and highly effective training materials. It is a unique blend of mechanical engineering, technical sales, pedagogy, and digital innovation.
Why my work matters
The global transition toward sustainable heating and cooling—particularly the widespread adoption of efficient heat pumps—is absolutely critical for the future of our planet. But this technological shift can only happen if we have a highly skilled workforce ready to implement it. By training the next generation of technicians and modernizing how we share technical data across the industry, I am helping to accelerate this transition. Empowering technicians with the right knowledge and tools ensures that energy-efficient climate solutions are installed correctly, ultimately reducing global energy consumption and driving our industry toward a greener future.

As an HVAC and refrigeration technician, I work with cooling systems that help preserve food, reduce post-harvest losses, and support reliable cold storage operations. My work involves installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and ensuring refrigeration equipment operates efficiently and safely. Every day, I use technical skills, problem-solving, attention to detail, and a commitment to continuous learning to keep these systems running.
One of the most valuable skills I use is the ability to diagnose and solve problems. Whether it's identifying a fault in a refrigeration system or optimizing equipment performance, each challenge requires both technical knowledge and critical thinking. I also rely on teamwork, communication, and safety practices to deliver quality results in the field.
My work matters because refrigeration is much more than cooling—it protects food, supports businesses, and improves livelihoods. In agriculture, effective cold storage helps farmers reduce waste and reach markets with better-quality produce. This strengthens food security and contributes to economic growth.
As a woman in a technical field, I am proud to represent and encourage more young women to pursue careers in HVAC&R. Every project I work on is an opportunity to learn, grow, and demonstrate that skill, determination, and innovation can create meaningful impact.
To me, "Cool Intelligence" is using knowledge, technology, and practical skills to build a more sustainable future. Through refrigeration, we help conserve resources, reduce waste, and create solutions that benefit people, communities, and the planet.

I am Amit Mittal Associated with Technofrigo by Clauger based in Dubai. by equalization Mechanical engineer but by profession refrigeration since 18 years now in the industry. Working in the energy Sector with all key players in the GCC region. We are specialized in Providing tailor made Refrigeration system for Petrochemical , Oil and Gas , Refinery and Fertilizer industries.

whenever we arrived at Energy plant ( LNG , Petrochemicals and Refinery ) in the Gulf was running its process chillers at full load — all year round.

Not because the process demanded it.
Because nobody had looked closely enough.

When we reached , the picture became clear fast:

→ Condenser fouling had pushed head pressure up significantly — compressors working harder than they needed to
→ Set points hadn't been reviewed since commissioning — cooling loads had changed, controls hadn't
→ No load staging logic in place — lead-lag sequencing was manual and inconsistent
→ Economizer circuit was bypassed — had been for months

None of these were major failures. No alarms. No breakdowns.
Just quiet, compounding inefficiency — the kind that doesn't show up until you look for it.

We worked with the site team on a structured optimization plan:

✦ Condenser cleaning + tube inspection
✦ Set point rationalization based on actual process demand curves
✦ Auto load-staging commissioned across the chiller bank
✦ Economizer circuit restored and validated

The result? ~11% reduction in chiller energy consumption — without a single equipment replacement.

No CAPEX. Just engineering attention , for me this is cool intelligence.

Process cooling is often treated as a utility — set it and forget it. But in energy-intensive petrochemical environments, chillers that "work" and chillers that are optimized are two very different things.

The gap between them is usually not hardware.
It's visibility simple intelligence.

Cool Intelligence, to me, reflects the convergence of system efficiency, technological innovation, and material science in modern cooling applications.
I work in precision stainless steel strip manufacturing — supplying the material foundation that refrigeration and HVAC systems are built on. In my experience, intelligence in cooling doesn't start with the control panel. It starts much earlier, at the material specification stage.
Getting the grade, temper, surface quality, and dimensional tolerance right — across thickness ranges from 0.05mm to 3.0mm — is what determines whether a compressor spring, a sealing component, or a sensor housing performs reliably across thousands of thermal cycles.
These aren't visible decisions. But they directly connect micro-scale material precision to macro-scale system performance.
To me, Cool Intelligence means understanding that reliability is engineered in — not added on. It's what makes cooling systems not just smart, but trustworthy.

Looking back 40 plus years when I started my refrigeration trade in the mid 80's, our trade has always been evolving for the better, from using harmful ozone refrigerants to extremely clever controls being used today, the changes have been for the better of our planet, we need to continue to strive on making things even better as our children and grandchildren need to live in a world where there is less harm to the Earth. I would have never thought that I could change a temperature of a chiller from the other side of the world, its also rewarding to see that natural refrigerants (except ammonia which has been around) have done a full circle and being used more and more, the key to todays refrigeration equipment is focusing on sustainability, energy efficiencies COP's and carbon footprints, all these are smart #coolintelligence which will help our world get greener.

I have spent more than 23 years in the refrigeration industry, and every day still brings a new puzzle to solve.
People often ask what a service specialist actually does. To me, it’s simple: we are the invisible backbone keeping critical industries moving. Whether its ensuring food stays fresh across the region, or keeping large-scale industrial plants running safely, our work touches daily life in ways most people don't even realize.
But it’s not just about keeping things cold anymore. It’s about doing it sustainably. Every time my team and I optimize a compressor or fine-tune a system, we are lowering energy use and reducing the footprint on our planet.

So, what does "Cool Intelligence" mean to me?
To me, it’s the perfect bridge between modern data and old-school intuition. Today’s cooling systems are incredibly smart, packed with advanced technology. But data only tells half the story.
True intelligence is using that data alongside 23 years of hands-on experience to know exactly how a system is running just by listening to it. It’s about making smart, split-second decisions on-site to prevent downtime, and keep things running efficiently for the long haul.
Advanced technology is a powerful tool, but it’s the human element behind it that truly brings it to life.

For me, Cool Intelligence is about making sure great ideas don't stay hidden.

The HVAC&R industry is full of brilliant engineering, expertise, and innovation. Every day, people across our industry are developing technologies that improve comfort, protect food and medicines, reduce energy consumption, and help create a more sustainable future.

But technology has the biggest impact when it stops being technology and starts solving real problems for real people.

That's why Cool Intelligence matters to me.

I've always been fascinated by how much brilliant engineering gets hidden behind language that most people would never understand. We have an industry full of important stories to tell, but sometimes we communicate them in a way that only other people in the industry can understand.

That's where I fit in.

I help humanise an industry that often talks like a datasheet.

My work sits between technical expertise and the people who need it. Through content, communication, branding, and storytelling, I help turn complex information into something clearer, more relatable, and more useful.

Not because the technology needs simplifying, but because people deserve clarity.

I love finding the story behind the specification sheet. The real-world impact behind the product features. The reason it matters to the engineer, installer, building owner, or end user.

Refrigeration protects food, medicines, and livelihoods. Cooling keeps people safe, healthy, and productive. Heat pumps are helping shape a more sustainable future. These technologies touch almost every part of modern life, yet most people rarely stop to think about them.

To me, Cool Intelligence isn't just about creating smarter technologies. It's about helping people understand why those technologies matter.

Because sometimes the biggest impact comes from helping the right information reach the right person at the right time.

No reparo equipos; corrijo procesos.

My name is Carlos C. Obella, and I am an independent HVACR consultant through Cold Feeling Consulting. For more than three decades, I have worked with manufacturers, distributors, contractors, technicians, and professional organizations throughout Latin America. During that time, I have witnessed major changes in our industry—from new refrigerants and evolving regulations to advanced technologies that continue to reshape the market. To me, Cool Intelligence is the combination of knowledge, experience, judgment, and continuous learning that allows people to make the right decisions for safe, efficient, and sustainable cooling and heating systems. Technology is an essential part of our future, but technology alone does not transform an industry. People do. I use Cool Intelligence every day by helping organizations develop their most valuable asset: their people. Through consulting, training, certification initiatives, and industry development programs, I work to strengthen professional skills across the HVACR value chain. My focus is on promoting best practices in sales, installation, commissioning, operation, maintenance, and service, particularly for systems using lower-global-warming-potential refrigerants and more sustainable technologies. Throughout my career, I have held regional executive positions in product management, engineering, and international business development. These experiences have given me a broad perspective of the industry and reinforced an important lesson: the most successful companies are those that invest in developing their people. Technical knowledge creates competence, but continuous learning creates leadership. Why does this work matter? Because HVACR is much more than equipment. Our industry protects food, preserves medicines and vaccines, supports data centers, enables industrial processes, and improves comfort, productivity, and quality of life for millions of people. At the same time, it plays a critical role in improving energy efficiency and supporting global sustainability goals. I believe that sharing knowledge is one of the most powerful ways to create positive changes. My professional philosophy can be summarized in a simple idea: “Sharing knowledge multiplies results.” Every technician trained, every distributor better prepared, and every organization committed to higher standards contributes to a stronger industry and a more sustainable future. My vision is to help build a Latin American HVACR industry that is more professional, competitive, innovative, and environmentally responsible—where manufacturers, distributors, contractors, and technicians work together to continuously raise the standards of our profession. That is Cool Intelligence in action to me.

Cool Intelligence means that we hold a remarkable superpower in our hands: the ability to provide cooling wherever and whenever society needs it.

As scientists, engineers, and technicians, we know that nothing is truly created from nothing. Yet through knowledge, technology, and innovation, we can harness this power to deliver extraordinary benefits for humanity.

But Cool Intelligence is also about making refrigeration, air conditioning, and heat pump (RACHP) systems smarter. Through digitalisation, sensors, connectivity, and artificial intelligence, we can optimise their operation, use energy only when and where needed, and continuously improve efficiency.

It means moving from reactive maintenance to predictive and preventive maintenance, identifying potential problems before they occur, reducing downtime, extending equipment lifetime, and improving reliability.

Cooling has transformed cities that only a few decades ago were considered inhospitable desert environments. It enables fresh food, medicines, and vaccines to reach communities that once could only dream of having them available on their tables and in their hospitals.

It protects health, preserves food, supports industry, powers data centres, and improves the quality of life of billions of people every day.

Behind this achievement stand hundreds of thousands of professionals across the refrigeration, air conditioning, and heat pump sector—designers, engineers, technicians, manufacturers, trainers, researchers, and policymakers—working together to make cooling safe, efficient, and sustainable.

Our challenge today is to use this superpower wisely.

By combining innovation, efficiency, sustainability, and human skills, we can help build a society that is fairer, more prosperous, more inclusive, and more peaceful for everyone.

This is Cool Intelligence

Happy World Refrigeration Day.

  • Photo Guidelines – 2026 "Cool Intelligence" Pose

Choose one of these "thinking globe" poses:

    Pose A – Palm PlatformPose A – Palm Platform Pose B – Side PalmPose B – Side Palm Pose C – Lightbulb MomentPose C – Lightbulb Moment
    • Pose A – Palm Platform: One hand touching your temple, the other held out in front of you at chest height, palm facing up as if presenting an invisible globe.
    • Pose B – Side Palm: One hand touching your temple, the other held slightly to the side at chest height, palm facing up, again as if supporting a glowing globe.
    • Pose C – Lightbulb Moment: One hand touching your temple, the other index finger pointing upwards beside your head, like you've just had a brilliant idea.
    • Clothing: Workwear looks great! Company logos/uniforms are welcome. Work clothes can be overalls, site gear, or office wear.
    • Background: On site, in the plant room, the office, or at home – all fine. Good lighting and minimal clutter make the logo stand out.
    • Composition: Try to include the upper half of the person (head, shoulders, arms, and hands fully visible). Avoid cropping out elbows or the top of the head. Top tip: A darker top often works best for showcasing the logo graphic.
    • Expression: Looking directly at the camera usually works best. Aim for confident, friendly, and thoughtful.
    • Hand position: Make sure the "logo hand" (palm up or pointing finger) has a clear space above it for us to add the WRD "Cool Intelligence" globe. Keep your temple hand clearly visible, gently touching the side of your head.

No need for professional photography – a clear, well-lit phone photo is absolutely fine!

Accepted file types: jpg, jpeg, png, Max. file size: 5 MB.
