My job is to keep things running cool—literally and figuratively.

As Managing Director at Ziehl-Abegg US, I’ve spent my career making sure operations stay smooth, systems stay efficient, and our teams stay energized. From leading the construction of our new, state-of-the-art manufacturing and R&D facility in Winston-Salem to scaling up production of high-efficiency fans, I’m proud to be part of an industry that quietly (and coolly) supports modern life.

My “cool skills”? Staying calm under pressure, building strong, high-performing teams, and solving problems that others might freeze up over. I thrive in that space where engineering precision meets operational flow—and nothing beats seeing innovative solutions take shape from the shop floor to the customer.

World Refrigeration Day is a chance to turn the spotlight on the people and technologies that keep our world comfortable, connected, and climate-conscious. I’m honored to be part of an industry that’s not only cool—but essential.

Refrigeration technologies and their contribution to modern society is of paramount importance.
We celebrate this day to recognize the advancements in refrigeration, air conditioning, and heat pump technologies and their impact on our daily lives. As our focus on sustainability is increasing, this emphasizes the role of these technologies in promoting sustainability and addressing climate change.

Personally, steering ZIEHL-ABEGG Middle East FZE as Managing Director, my focus is on fostering robust growth through strategic oversight and adept project management. My journey within the company has seen a progression through pivotal sales and management roles, culminating in a leadership position that leverages my comprehensive understanding of HVAC systems design and P&L management.

Collaborating with a diverse team, we've achieved notable success in the mechanical and industrial engineering industry by prioritizing innovative solutions and client satisfaction. My approach is centered around applying my project, general and engineering management skills to drive operational excellence, ensuring our engineering solutions meet the complex demands of today's market.

With fans and control technology from ZIEHL-ABEGG, mature technical solutions are available for these challenges that have been tried and tested many times. ZIEHL-ABEGG provides fan technology that not only has the efficiency you need but also operates very energy-efficiently. The biomimetically designed blades of our innovative fans are also much quieter than standard blades and therefore significantly reduce noise emissions during operation.

I have worked as an application engineer in refrigeration and air conditioning as well as technical for all markets before supporting our customers face to face as a sales manager. Now I am Managing Director of the UK subsidiary, so I get to support all our customers, when they grow, we grow together.

What would my cool skill be? I guess I would say I’m able to listen and communicate. It doesn’t sound a lot but if you can listen to what is required and with the technical skills I have, I understand the problem, I can then find the solution and I can effectively communicate this with the customer.

With the innovative leading-edge products that Ziehl Abegg offer we always tend to have a solution that not only gives the customer what they want but normally we can do it quieter or by using less energy as well.

This is why so many customers work with Ziehl Abegg we grow together, our product is part of an application/process so it’s essential we understand the applications.

I love my job, I get to meet new people all the time, I like to think I have built great relationships over the years. Plus, I get to see lots of applications, and I get to work with a market leading company with great colleagues from all around the world.

In an industry where precision, timing, and reliability are essential, the mindset behind how we lead and operate matters just as much as the technology we deliver.

As a Managing Director, cool skills to me mean the ability to see the full picture while staying close to the detail. It’s about setting a clear direction, making sound decisions, and creating the momentum that drives a business forward.

It also means being able to connect the technical with the strategic – ensuring that what we build, deliver, and service creates real value for our customers. Behind every solution is a customer expectation, and meeting that with reliability and confidence is what defines long-term success.

Cool skills live in our teams – the planners, technicians, engineers, and support functions—who make things happen every day. It’s about navigating complexity with structure, acting with clarity, and creating the conditions for others to perform. That’s what enables us to grow with purpose and serve our partners with consistency.

Kim is our NPD engineer and joined Hussmann in 2021 and together with our journey with P Series development.
Kim’s fascination with engineering began as a kid dismantling appliances to understand ‘how things work.’ A pivotal moment early in my career was making a retrofit project for a residential refrigeration system. Seeing firsthand how optimized FDHP technology reduced energy use by 30% while maintaining performance convinced me this field merges innovation with tangible planetary impact.

At Hussmann, I spearhead New Product Development for new generation multideck development that is our new generation of P Series. What excites me most is transforming theoretical eco-designs into real-world solutions.

As an NPD engineer, I prioritize knowledge sharing through weekly ‘Deep Dive’ sessions where team members dissect failed prototypes with me. One key lesson from my career: True leadership means creating psychological safety – like when we transformed a flammable refrigerant containment setback into a patent-pending safety valve design through blameless brainstorming.

To me, ‘Cool Skills’ means balancing technical mastery with adaptive thinking. The next decade demands AI-driven predictive maintenance and hydrocarbon retrofit expertise.

Working in industrial refrigeration has been surprisingly interesting and satisfying.
It's much more than just keeping things cold, and there's always something new to learn or a different opportunity to take!

One of the best parts is getting to talk to young people and helping to open their eyes to STEM careers whilst showing the younger generation that STEM careers are for everyone!
Since being qualified, I have realised I really enjoy teaching the SURE apprentices. Sharing what I know and helping them succeed is very rewarding, especially because I remember being in their place not too long ago.

I'm becoming more involved with natural refrigerants, which are better for the environment.
Every day, I try to absorb as much information as possible from our more senior engineers, as without their knowledge being passed on, the skill set will soon disappear due to the extreme shortage of engineers.

I'm passionate about making a positive impact on both the industry and the environment, and this job gives me the perfect chance to do that.

Looking ahead, I hope to be recognised within the industry as a skilled engineer and to continue learning from senior colleagues to preserve essential skills. My goal is to make a lasting, positive difference in this field and hopefully I inspire some others along the way.

I've been in the refrigeration industry for near 15 years as a service technician, installer, design engineer and a consultant. Every day is a school day with how quickly the industry changes and I'm glad to be a part of such critical infrastructure that impacts everyone's daily lives.

The daily role as a consultant ranges from attending site for scoping projects and liaising with customers, suppliers and contractors, to designing systems, analysing system performance and carrying out market and strategic research.

Why it matters? Without refrigeration, there is no modern world, yet few people know or recognise the engineers, project managers, suppliers, administration staff who keep food safe to eat, ensure data centres operate, and control environments so that medical surgeries can take place. The world would be a very, very different place without cooling.

Ana Carolina de Souza Rodrigues

Ana Carolina de Souza Rodrigues is a Senior Application Engineer at Copeland in Brazil, specializing in compressors and condensing units, with extensive experience in technical support and development of refrigeration and air conditioning solutions. Ana works directly with customers, ensuring the efficient and strategic application of the company's technologies.

For her, some of the essential skills in the sector are the ability to observe patterns and details, solve problems and, above all, communicate clearly. "Refrigeration is a multidisciplinary area, which integrates electrical, mechanical and thermodynamics, for example. But none of this works without effective communication between the teams and with customers," she highlights. Ana also likes to see beyond the technical side. "When we think of a compressor, we are talking about transforming electrical energy into mechanical and finally thermal energy, which in turn preserves food that will feed thousands of families. This is the importance of the responsibility we have in society." She believes that listening, planning together and acting in harmony on different fronts — such as in a supermarket construction, for example — is essential for the success of any project.

Alan Bastida

Alan Bastida

Montreal Protocol Consultant

×

Alan Bastida

I’m a consultant with nearly 20 years of experience supporting countries in Latin America and the Caribbean to transition toward more sustainable and energy-efficient refrigeration and air conditioning (RAC) systems. My work focuses on implementing the Montreal Protocol and Kigali Amendment—helping countries eliminate ozone-depleting substances, reduce HFCs, and adopt low-GWP technologies that are safer for the climate and for people.

Over the years, I’ve collaborated with governments, industries, technical institutes, and multilateral agencies. I help design national strategies, support policy reforms, coordinate technical trainings, and develop tools for traceability, licensing, and end-of-life refrigerant management. From advising on HC refrigerants like R-290 to guiding the development of HFC quota systems or training simulators, my role is to connect technical innovation with practical, local realities.

The “cool skills” I use daily go beyond the technical. Of course, you need a solid understanding of refrigeration technologies, energy efficiency standards, and safety protocols. But you also need the ability to communicate across sectors, listen carefully to different perspectives, and adapt solutions to different cultural and institutional contexts. Every country has its own story, and real impact happens when you work with—not just for—people.

What drives me is the belief that sustainable cooling is not just a technical issue—it’s about inclusion, health, equity, and climate justice. Cooling is essential for food security, public health, and productivity in a warming world, but the solutions must be accessible and adapted to each country’s needs and capacities. That’s why I always aim to place people at the center of every project: their knowledge, their habits, their challenges, and their ideas.

Why does this work matter? Because the cooling sector is both a major challenge and an incredible opportunity. By improving how we cool, we can cut emissions, reduce energy use, and protect the most vulnerable. We can also empower technicians, modernize industries, and build stronger institutions. I feel lucky to work in a space where science, policy, and human connection come together—and where small, smart changes can have a global impact.

Michael Brady – Apprentice Engineer, Climarite Refrigeration
Bootle, Liverpool | Age 32

I fell in love with the refrigeration industry from day one. I was hooked on the systems, the problem-solving and the vital role refrigeration plays in daily life.

What I love most about working in refrigeration is the variety — no two days are ever the same. From airports to restaurants, food production warehouses to music and sports stadiums, I’ve worked in some of the UK’s most interesting and challenging environments. The job has also taken me all over the country, from the Welsh Mountains to the Scottish Highlands to the Lake District and London. I’ve even had the chance to meet my hero, Jamie Carragher, while fixing a fridge!

Refrigeration isn’t just a career — it’s a passion. I’m proud to be part of a highly-skilled, ever-evolving trade and I look forward to growing within it. I think problem solving is a strength of mine and I get better at that every day. Despite being under an apprenticeship scheme still I’ve recently taken up opportunities to mentor and train up new starters, interns and participate in local careers fairs, which is something I’ve loved. It’s a nice to know I’ve got valuable skills and knowledge to pass on to others.

I am genuinely excited to see where this career will take me, it’s been a fantastic journey so far and I’m only really just getting started.

With nine years of experience in the refrigeration industry, I bring a comprehensive background as a refrigeration engineer. My career has included roles as a design engineer, consultant, and senior engineer—giving me hands-on experience with rack manufacturers, installers, service providers, and now, as an end-user. This diverse journey has given me a holistic understanding of the refrigeration sector and the broad range of Cool Skills it requires.

Currently, I serve as the Senior Refrigeration Engineer at Woolworths Group, where I manage specifications for refrigeration systems and coolrooms. My responsibilities include overseeing refrigeration racks, gas coolers, condensers, evaporators, and all installation components essential for the effective operation of supermarket refrigeration systems.

A key part of my role is promoting innovation within the business. I lead initiatives focused on the transition to natural refrigerants, improvements in energy efficiency, and addressing challenges such as extreme climates and water resource management—all of which rely on a deep and evolving set of Cool Skills.

My technical expertise includes the design of CO₂ refrigeration systems capable of delivering both space heating and cooling. This requires careful selection of compressors and auxiliary components, pipe sizing, and gas cooler configuration to optimise performance.

I have also undertaken theoretical modelling to evaluate Total Cost of Ownership, using energy consumption data informed by meteorological conditions and maintenance projections. This ensures systems are optimised for year-round performance, not just a specific design point.

In addition, I’ve been involved in monitoring and performance verification—conducting site surveys to confirm compliance with design specifications and analysing controller data to assess real-world equipment performance, helping extend operational life and reliability.

I’ve also developed thermodynamic simulation tools to model refrigeration rack systems from first principles, including booster systems, heat pumps, and liquid recirculation components—applying some of the most advanced Cool Skills in system analysis and optimisation.

I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and have recently completed my AIRAH Professional Engineering Accreditation, further strengthening the skills and knowledge I bring to the evolving future of our industry.

Dimitrios Dalavouras

"I’m Dimitrios Dalavouras, a mechanical engineer from Greece and Technical Manager at General Refrigeration SA—and you could say refrigeration runs in my blood. My father, affectionately known in our country as “the Refrigeration Guru,” had me tagging along in plant rooms before I could spell compressor. Those early days, watching him coax stubborn racks back to life, hooked me for good.

These days my “office” shifts constantly—from rapid-chill tunnels on Peloponnese peach farms to transcritical CO₂ racks that keep supermarket aisles frosty even when Greek summers push past 40 °C. Whenever someone mutters, “Let’s see how the machine behaves,” I fall back on a lesson learned early: it will run exactly the way it’s designed to run. It’s not luck—it’s science. That mindset drives my core skills: thermodynamic load calculations that right-size every evaporator, high-pressure CO₂ commissioning that tames flash-gas madness, and forensic leak hunts that keep climate-friendly refrigerants safely in the circuit while squeezing every kilowatt-hour into useful cooling.

Why do I love it? Because each installation is a puzzle with real-world stakes: safer food, healthier patients, lighter carbon footprints, and cooler, more comfortable communities. "

Refrigeration is one of those industries that quietly keeps the world turning. It has a huge range of vital applications. My role sits within pharmaceutical manufacturing, where I work as a refrigeration engineer supporting industrial freeze dryers. These machines play a key role in the production of much needed medication, and it’s our job to ensure they operate reliably, efficiently, and safely.

I think my job entails many cool skills. One of the most important skills in this industry is the ability to stay calm and focused under pressure. We operate in a fast-paced environment, where equipment issues can quickly affect production timelines and patient supply. Having a patient-first mentality helps us prioritize what truly matters—delivering safe, effective outcomes for the end user.

Problem-solving is another critical skill. No two faults are ever quite the same, and being able to apply logical thinking to complex systems is key. Keeping a machine running within its validated parameters means being able to break down a problem methodically, paying close attention to detail.

Then there are the hands-on skills—practical abilities that take years to refine. Brazing, pipe fabrication (often in small, hard to work in places), pressure testing, and fault finding all come into play regularly. They may not be glamorous, but they are the backbone of the work we do. Precision and safety are non-negotiable when dealing with high-pressure systems and volatile gases, and getting it right is a skill in itself.

Lastly, communication and collaboration are often overlooked but imperative. We don’t work in isolation—we are part of a wider team that supports operators, production teams, and quality. Being able to explain technical faults in understandable terms or work closely with other departments is just as important as turning a spanner.

The refrigeration industry might not always get the spotlight, but the skills it demands are diverse, valuable, complex and constantly evolving. It’s not just about fixing things—it’s about thinking critically, working ethically, and supporting a much bigger picture.

Coolskills means EVERYTHING because Refrigeration is in everything, we do nowadays. Of everything we do on this planet, without the Refrigeration sector, nothing modern could exist. So, talking about Refrigeration is talking about one of the most important pillars of the modern world. Rather, I would say that we must already understand the role that Refrigeration plays for humanity. A day like World Refrigeration Day becomes a very important day that all the humanity should know and celebrate. We must pierce the bubbles and ensure that the World Refrigeration Day is no longer known only by those involved in the Refrigeration sector; but that it is known by the entire world. This will allow us to preserve our planet through the effective and efficient use of Refrigeration equipment and will also preserve food (agriculture, fishery, meat, …), medicine production that allows us to feed and keep healthy the entire planet. To achieve this goal, the press and all mass media outlets must be trained and involved. Journalists need to understand what refrigeration means and then they can do their job, because they have the know-how to make it known and we have the technical CoolSkills.
General knowledge of refrigeration could contribute to the socio-economic development of the African continent and solve many of the problems that the continent, the cradle of humanity, has always faced in one way or another without major success. Hunger continues to claim human lives, and we continue to talk about production without mentioning conservation.

World Refrigeration Day, commemorated each year on June 26, underscores the critical importance of refrigeration and air conditioning technologies in our daily lives. These systems are vital not only for preserving food and medicines, which require precise temperature controls to maintain quality and safety, but also for ensuring comfort in our homes, workplaces, and public spaces. The positive impact of these technologies is both profound and far-reaching, influencing health, safety, and productivity.

As a dedicated technical sales representative with over 17 years of experience across the commercial refrigeration, cold chain, and ventilation industries, I have focused my career on promoting energy-efficient and cost-effective solutions tailored to various sectors, including retail, pharmaceuticals, commercial, industrial, and food services. Throughout my journey in the HVACR industry, I have gained extensive knowledge in various areas, including cold storage equipment design, project execution, and system selection.

I specialize in identifying and implementing the most efficient backward curved EC (electronically commutated) fans, facilitating seamless upgrades from traditional belt-driven systems to advanced EC plug fans. These upgrades are particularly beneficial for air handling units (AHUs), Fan coil units (FCUs) etc in both commercial and industrial applications, as they not only enhance energy efficiency but also help clients minimize operational costs and reduce their carbon footprints.

Additionally, I actively contribute to the precise selection of air curtains, heat pump across diverse industries, such as supermarkets, office buildings, tram and train stations, airports, and specialized projects involving freezer and chiller rooms. By understanding the specific requirements of each environment, I am able to provide customized, energy-efficient solutions that enhance climate control and comfort while optimizing energy usage.

I am deeply committed to promoting sustainable practices that not only meet customer demands but also benefit our planet. World Refrigeration Day presents a valuable opportunity to celebrate the innovation and dedication that professionals in the HVACR industry contribute to society. Looking ahead, I am enthusiastic about advocating for advancements in energy efficiency, ensuring that our systems continue to evolve in ways that align with both economic viability and environmental stewardship.

In essence, World Refrigeration Day serves as a poignant reminder of the critical role our work in the HVACR sector plays in shaping a sustainable future. I take pride in actively contributing to this industry that has a significant impact on our lives.

As a Production Engineer at Polar Specialized Industries, I lead the manufacturing of insulated doors for cold stores and temperature-controlled facilities. These doors are used across the UAE and the wider region, and are a key component in cold chain systems that support food safety, healthcare, and logistics.

My job is often behind the scenes, but it impacts people’s lives in real ways. Whether it’s ensuring a walk-in freezer maintains the right temperature for vaccines or reducing energy waste in a warehouse, every part we produce has to meet a high standard. I manage daily production planning, oversee a team of skilled technicians, review technical drawings, and coordinate with procurement and QA/QC to make sure every door we deliver is exactly what the project requires.

I’ve always believed that engineering is more than calculations or machines, it’s a responsibility. A small mistake in sealing or insulation could lead to a shipment of spoiled food, or worse, ineffective medicine. So, I treat every project like it matters, because it really does.

I work closely with the drafting, QC, and site teams, making sure our doors are not just built to spec, but built to last. I also spend time explaining our designs to the team, solving problems on the floor, and helping improve how we work. I enjoy connecting the technical side with the human side. It’s challenging, but rewarding.

Being part of this campaign is a moment of pride. For most people, cooling systems are invisible. They only notice when something goes wrong. But for us in the industry, we see the big picture. We see the chain that connects farms to supermarkets, labs to clinics, and how a simple door can make a huge difference.

To me, “Cool Skills” are about reliability, precision, and care. It’s not flashy. It’s quiet, steady work. But it’s the kind of work that keeps the world running.

I started in the refrigeration industry as soon as I left school so I have been in the trade for over 40+ years. It has been a fantastic journey the whole way from my apprenticeship right up until owning my own business in Zimbabwe as well as in New Zealand. Refrigeration has allowed me to travel overseas and work and experience different cultures along the way, I’ve worked on every everything from domestic, commercial to industrial refrigeration which is all being a great opportunity

Along this wonderful journey I’ve learnt so many different skills from the basics of learning how to install commission, service and maintain equipment. Owning my own business also allowed me to look into the design side of things in the trade. The trade also gives us so many other skills such as electrical, plumbing, building, welding and mechanical work which really makes us a Jack of all trades which allows us to be diverse and think outside the square a lot of times.

I am very passionate about the trade and I want to keep passing this passion onto our future generations and try and get them involved in this awesome trade. I’m trying to give back to the industry as well as promote the refrigeration/air-conditioning trade and World Refrigeration Day has allowed this to happen in order to highlight the importance of refrigeration/air-conditioning throughout the world as the reality is without it, we wouldn’t be where we all are today, this trade has evolved so much since I started it in the 80s and the technology is always evolving which allows us to keep learning about new things. It’s fantastic to see how we’ve gone in a circle in regards to refrigerants starting off with naturals moving onto the synthetics and back to naturals which has been proven is the only way to go.

So to all those boys and girls out there who are wanting to get into a trade, in my personal opinion you’ll never find one better than Refrigeration and Air-conditioning and you will learn so many different #coolskills along the way, you will not have any regrets.
